We bought some freshly made doughnuts and walked to Long Beach, admiring the lovely aqua water and wispy white clouds. We found a trail which led to an undeveloped beach named Lo Mu Dee. After some sunbathing, we followed another trail which meandered up into the hills. We cut back down to another beach, following a jagged rocky path. There, we snorkeled close to shore and Lisa had a frightful encounter with what we think was a large eel.

We walked over some rocks to Ranti beach and then found another trail leading up through the jungle. Fending off mosquitoes, we passed by large exotic trees as skinks scampered off our path. We made it back to the best viewpoint just in time for an incredible flaming sunset. As we watched the rays of golden light spreading out across the sky, a storm began to roll in on the far side of the bay. From our vantage point, we watched white lightning illuminating the glowing blue sky on one side of the bay while the sun was setting on the other side. We were able to pull ourselves away just in time to get back to our hotel before the rain got us.

Such bluegreen water!!! I want to hear the eel story, dude! Was it an attack-eel? Or overly curious? Or frightfully inclined to display sharp teeth? Do eel have teeth?

That’s a nifty underwater shot - I take it your underwater camera bag thing is holding up well?

Love you guys!

We’re glad to hear people are enjoying the blog. Thanks for passing it around.

As far as the eel goes, we rented snorkels for the day and were out in an isolated part of the island, snorkeling just off the shore. We had seen lots of fish and enjoyed getting used to the snorkels. Lisa came upon what she assumed to be a snake at first, about 2 1/2″ in diameter and maybe 2 1/2 feet long. It was facing her and looked agitated. Its movements seemed a little like something that might strike. She quickly started backpaddling (which is quite difficult to do when snorkeling) and after getting a few feet of distance, turned around and swam away. It was a light color and after some thought, she realized it was more likely an eel than a snake. Who knows whether it’s actually dangerous or not.
The next day, Eric saw a black and white striped snake swimming down among the coral. It was a peaceful encounter.

The Dicapac camera case is working great. We’ve got our fingers crossed that it continues to do so for the rest of the trip. However, one of our 2 GB memory cards has malfunctioned, losing some pictures and rendering it useless. That’s unfortunate, but we’ll probably make it through on the other cards.
